Procedure

Solid 77% maximum m-CPBA (12 g, 53 mmol) was added portionwise to a 0° C. solution of (R)-4-chloro-5-methyl-6,7-dihydro-5H-cyclopenta[d]pyrimidine (5 g, 30 mmol) in CHCl3 (80 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The reaction mixture was cooled to 0° C., and then treated by the addition of NaHCO3 (25 g, 196 mmol) slurry in water (100 mL). This was followed by the dropwise addition of Na2CO3 (14 g, 128 mmol) in water (100 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred for 30 minutes. The aqueous phase was extracted with CHCl3. The organic phase was dried with MgSO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure at low temperature (<25° C.) to afford the crude (R)-4-chloro-5-methyl-6,7-dihydro-5H-cyclopenta[d]pyrimidine 1-oxide (5.5 g, 100%), which was used in the next step without further purification.
