Procedure

4 ml of acetic acid and 6.24 g (56.7 mmol) of a 30% hydrogen peroxide aqueous solution as an oxidizing agent were added to 5.37 g (18.9 mmol) of the 4-(2-fluoroethoxy)-5,8-dimethylthiochroman-6-carboxylic acid, and the mixture was allowed to react at 80° C. for2hours. After the reaction mixture was allowed to cool, a 2% sodium hydrogensulfite aqueous solution was added to the reaction mixture, excessive hydrogen peroxide was removed, and a precipitated crystal was recovered by filtration and dried to give 5.08 g (yield 85%) of 4-(2-fluoroethoxy)-5,8-dimethylthiochroman-6-carboxylic acid-1,1-dioxide (corresponding to compound of the formula (II-2)).
