N-Methyl-4-nitrophenethylamine (0.41 g, 2.3 mmole), 2-bromomethyl-5-nitrobenzofuran (0.66 g, 2.6 mmole), sodium iodide (0.39 g, 2.6 mmole) and potassium carbonate (0.36 g, 2.6 mmole) were heated at reflux temperature in acetonitrile (50 ml) for 8 days. The solvent was then evaporated, water was added, and the mixture extracted three times with methylene chloride. The combined organic extracts were washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to give a semi-solid which was recrystallised from isopropanol to give the title compound, yield 380 mg.
