The starting material is prepared as follows: A mixture of 2.2 g of 4-(diethylphosphonomethyl)pyridine [Roczniki Chem. 38, (4), 625 (1964); Chem. Abst. 61, 10703], 2.2 g of m-chloroperbenzoic acid and 30 ml of chloroform is stirred at room temperature for 16 hours. The solvent is removed in vacuo and water is added. After washing the aqueous layer with ether, the water is removed in vacuo to afford 4-(diethylphosphonomethyl)pyridine-N-oxide.
