A mixture of 6-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-4-(3-chlorophenyl)-2(1H)-quinolinone (0.127 mol), described in International Patent Specification WO 97/21701, in phosphoryl chloride (125 ml) was stirred and heated at 40° C. for one night, stirred further at 70° C. for one night and evaporated till dryness, yielding (100%) of [2-chloro-4(3-chlorophenyl)-6-quinolinyl](4-chlorophenyl)-methanone hydrochloride (1:1) (intermediate 55).
