Procedure
A mixture of 4-[1-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-2-methylpropyl]benzenamine (0.023 mol) and dihydro-2H-pyran-2,6(3H)-dione (0.03 mol) in THF (200 ml) was stirred and refluxed for 12 hours. When the reaction was complete, the solvent was evaporated, yielding 7.5 g (±)-5-[[4-[1-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-2-methylpropyl]phenyl]amino]-5-oxopentanoic acid (compound 218).
