Procedure

The acid chloride (2.5 g, 7.6 mmol) prepared in Step (d) of Example 1 was added to a suspension of lithium aluminum hydride (“LAH”) (0.58 g, 25 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (10 mL) cooled to 0° C. The reaction mixture gradually warmed to room temperature over two hours. Aqueous HCl was added dropwise to quench excess LAH. The mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate and filtered through Celite. The filtrate was washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated. The resulting viscous liquid was triturated with hexane/diethyl ether to yield a pale yellow solid (1.9 g, 84%). Mp 70–72° C.
