Sodium hydride (60%, oily, 1.40 g) was added to a solution of methyl 3-hydroxyisoxazole-5-carboxylate (5.01 g) in N,N-dimethylformamide (70 ml) at 0° C., which was stirred for 15 minutes. 4-Chloromethyl-5-methyl-2-phenyloxazole (7.26 g) was added to the mixture. After being stirred at 60° C. for 2 hours, the reaction mixture was poured into water, which was extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated. The residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography to obtain methyl 3-(5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-oxazolylmethoxy)-5-isoxazolecarboxylate (7.96 g, yield 72%) as colorless crystals. This was recrystallized from tetrahydrofuran-hexane. Melting point: 123–124° C.
