A mixture of ethyl 3-[1-(4-hydroxybenzyl)-3-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]propionate (2.02 g), 1,2-dibromoethane (20 ml), potassium carbonate (1.68 g) and N,N-dimethylformamide (20 ml) was stirred at 90° C. for 24 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into water, which was extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated. The residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography to obtain ethyl 3-[1-[4-(2-bromoethoxy)benzyl]-3-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]propionate (1530 mg, yield 58%) as a colorless oily substance from the fraction eluted with ethyl acetate-hexane (1:4, volume ratio).
