A mixture of ethyl(E)-3-[1-[4-(5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-oxazolylmethoxy)benzyl]-4-phenyl-3-pyrrolyl]propenoate (600 mg), a 1N aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (5 ml), tetrahydrofuran (5 ml) and ethanol (5 ml) was stirred at 60° C. for 3 hours and 1N hydrochloric acid (7 ml) was added, which was extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried (MgSO4), and then concentrated. The crystals obtained were collected by filtration to yield (E)-3-[1-[4-(5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-oxazolylmethoxy)benzyl]-4-phenyl-3-pyrrolyl]propenoic acid (521 mg, yield: 92%). This was recrystallized from ethyl acetate-hexane. Melting point: 154–155° C.
