Procedure
A solution of 1-[6-trifluoromethylpyrid-2-yl]-1-methyl hydrazine (12.12 g; 0.069 mol), 3-methyl-2-butanone (5.96 g; 0.069 mol) and p-toluenesulphonic acid (0.13 g) in toluene (70 ml) was heated under reflux, with water removal (azeotrope), for 24 h. The solution was concentrated to yield an oil which was purified by flash-chromatography over silica (eluent: 20% diethyl ether in hexane) to yield 3-methyl-2-butanone 1-[6-trifluoromethylpyrid-2-yl]-1-methyl hydrazone as an orange oil (11.6 g; 71%). ##STR22##
