To a solution of glutarimide (136 mg, 1.2 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (2 mL) was added, at 0° C., sodium hydride (60% liquid paraffin dispersion, 44 mg, 1.1 mmol), and the mixture was stirred for 5 minutes. To this mixture was added (3aR*,10aS*)-9-benzyl-4-(bromoacetyl)-2,3,3a,4,9,10a-hexahydrobenzo[b]-cyclopenta[e][1,4]diazepin-10(1H)-one (413 mg, 1 mmol), and the mixture was stirred for 30 minutes at room temperature. The reaction mixture was poured into a saturated aqueous solution of ammonium chloride (4 mL), which was subjected to extraction twice with chloroform. Organic layers were combined, washed with water and dried over magnesium sulfate, which was subjected to filtration, and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The concentrate was crystallized from ethyl acetate-diethyl ether to give 305 mg (yield 68%) of the titled compound, m.p. 220°-221° C.
