Procedure

A mixture of 3-(2,3-dihydro-1H-indol-l-yl)-2-cyclohexen-1-one (2.515 g), cupric acetate (4.71 g) and palladium (II) acetate (0.20 g) in dry dimethylformamide (40 ml) was heated at 135° under nitrogen for 4 h. The solvent was then removed under reduced pressure and the residue was suspended in methanol and then filtered. The filtrate was evaporated under reduced pressure and the resultant residue was purified by FCC eluting with ethyl acetate to give the title compound (0.36 g) as a solid. A sample (20 mg) was recrystallised from ethyl acetate to give the title compound (15 mg), m.p. 208°-210°.
