Procedure
Benzylmercaptan (4.3 g) and potassium carbonate (4.8 g) were added to a solution of 2-(2'-chloro-3'-nitro-benzoyl)-1-methyl-imidazole (9.2 g) in 150 ml of N,N-dimethyl-formamide. The reaction mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 5 hours. Then, the reaction mixture was poured onto ice water, and the resulting mixture was extracted twice with ethyl acetate. The combined organic phases were washed with water and then dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The organic phase was concentrated under reduced pressure and the remaining residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluting solvent:hexane/ethyl acetate=95:5 v/v). 2-(2'-Benzylthio-3'-nitro-benzoyl)-1-methylimidazole (8.7 g) was obtained in this manner.
