0.82 g of pyridinium p-toluenesulfonate was added to a solution of 6.3 g of 1-(1-naphthyl)-2-[2-(p-toluenesulfonyloxy)ethoxy]ethanol and 2.97 ml of 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran dissolved in 63 ml of methylene chloride at room temperature. The resulting mixture was stirred at the same temperature for 20 minutes and further at 35°-40° C. for 10 minutes. The reaction mixture was cooled, washed with water, and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The residue thus obtained was purified by column chromatography (eluant: toluene/ethyl acetate=10/1) to obtain 7.53 g of colorless, oily 1-(1-naphthyl)-1-(tetrahydropyran-2-yloxy)-2-[2-(p-toluenesulfonyloxy)ethoxy]ethane.
