1,1-dimethoxy-1-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propan-2-ol is treated with a molar excess of p-toluenesulfonyl chloride in the presence of a molar excess of triethylamine in a manner similar to Example 25 to yield (S) 1,1-dimethoxy-1-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)prop-2-yl p-toluenesulfonate. That material is converted to (S) methyl 2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionate in a manner similar to that described in Example 17.
