2-Mercapto-4-hydroxy-6-phenylpyrimidine (8.6 g, 42 mmol) and chloroacetic acid (8.5 g, 90 mmol) were slurried in water (100 mL). After refluxing the mixture for 24 hours, hydrochloric acid was added and the precipitate was isolated by filtration. The solid was dried in a vacuum oven to give 6.6 g (83%) of 2,4-dihydroxy-6-phenylpyrimidine.
