A reaction was conducted as described in Example 6 except that benzoic acid was replaced with the same molar amount of 2-methoxyethyl benzoate, a compound represented by formula (3) where R2 is phenyl and OZ1 is an organic group derived from 2-methoxyethanol, and PGE was replaced with the same molar amount of 4-chlorophenyl glycidyl ether. Desired 1-(4-chlorophenoxymethyl)-2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl benzoate was formed in an analytical yield of 93% and isolated in a yield of 86%.
