A solution of the N-formylquinolone from Example 18, (1.0 g, 2.25 mmol) in dioxane (20 mL) and aqueous hydrochloric acid (1N, 20 mL) was heated at 100° C. for 31/2 hours. The solvent was removed and the residue was recrystallized from methanol to give the product as a white crystalline solid (0.85 g, 85% yield).
