Procedure
The phthalimide (6.6 g, 0.024 mole, prepared according to Step A) dissolved in 50 ml of anhydrous ethanol was treated with hydrazine hydrate (1.21 g, 1.18 ml, 0.024 mole) in one portion. The mixture was refluxed for 1 hour, cooled to 0° C., and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated on rotary evaporator to a volume of approximately 15 ml, acidified with 4N HCl in dioxane (0.06 ml, 0.025 mole), and sonicated. The precipitate was filtered at 0° C. and dried in vacuo to provide the title product as an off-white solid 5.1 g. It was used as such in the next step. MS (DCI, m/z: 143 [M+H]+
