A mixture of N-(1-ethylpyrazol-5-yl) -4-nitroanthranilic acid (3.4 g, 12.32 mmol) and POCl3 (20 ml) was refluxed for 8 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into ice-water, neutralized with concentrated NH4OH and the resulting solid was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried to afford 2.8 g (82%) of 1-ethyl-4-chloro-7-nitro-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]quinoline.
