To a mixture of 6-chloro-3-nitroindole-2-carboxylic acid (step 1, 2.35 g, 9.77 mmol) and N,O-dimethylhydroxylamine hydrochloride (3.81 g, 39.1 mmol) in DMF (50 ml) was added dropwise a dimethylformamide (15 ml) solution of WSC (5.61 g, 29.3 mmol) over 10 min. After stirring for 4 h the mixture was diluted with diethyl ether (200 ml) and washed with water (100 ml×4). The organic extract was dried (MgSO4) and solvent removed by evaporation. The crude product was recystallized from ethyl acetate to afford 1.55 g (56%) of the title compound.
