A solution of 0.310 g (0.7 mmol) of 1-benzyl-4-(3-phenyl-2-((S)-2-phenylpropionyl)oxypropyl)piperidine (Step 1a, isomer 1a), 0.8 g of ammonium formate, and 0.3 g of Pearlman's Catalyst (Pd(OH)2, 20% Pd, moist, Degussa type) in 20 mL of methanol was heated at reflux for 1 h. The mixture was cooled to rt and filtered through a pad of celite and concentrated to afford isomer 1b of the title compound which was used without further purification.
