Procedure

A solution of benzothiazole (0.243 g, 1.8 mmol) in 5 ml of dry THF was treated with 1.5M lithium diisopropylamide in cyclohexane (1.45 ml) at −78° C. and stirred at that temperature for 15 minutes. A solution of 3-[1-(phenylmethyl)-4-piperidinyl]propenal (452 mg, 1.97 mmol) in 3 ml of dry THF was added at −78° C. and stirred at that temperature for 30 minutes. The mixture was quenched with water and extracted with chloroform. The organic layer was dried and concentrated to give a thick yellow oil in a quantitative yield.
