Procedure

A stirred, room temperature solution of 3-methyl-1-butanol (0.5 mL, 4.52 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (10 mL) was treated with a 60% oil suspension of sodium hydride (0.24 g, 5.88 mmol). After 5 minutes, hydrogen gas evolution had subsided, so the dichloro-intermediate from Example 330A (1.0 g, 4.52 mmol) was added and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 20 hours. The reaction was quenched with 10% aqueous citric acid and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo, and the residue was purified by column chromatography (silica gel, 100% hexanes). The title compound was obtained as a pale yellow oil (yield: 0.7 g, 56.7%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 0.95 (d, J=6 Hz, 6H), 1.63 (s, 9H), 1.64 (q, J=6 Hz, 2H), 1.85 (nonet, J=6 Hz, 1H), 4.49 (t, J=6 Hz, 2H), 7.64 (s, 1H). MS (DCI/NH3) m/z 273 (M+H)+, 290 (M+NH4)+.
