5-bromo-3-cyclobutyl-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde was dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (30 mL), and potassium carbonate (10.79 g) and dimethylsulfuric acid (3.7 mL) were added to the solution under water cooling, and then the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 14 hours. The reaction solution was filtered and water was added, and then the reaction mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated brine, and then dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure and the obtained residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (n-hexane:ethyl acetate=20:1) to obtain the title compound (1.27 g) as a yellow oily substance.
