A mixture of 3-hydroxybenzonitrile (0.129 mol) in N,N-dimethyl-acetamide (200 mL) was stirred at room temperature and K2CO3 (0.147 mol) was added, then 4-chloro-2-dimethoxymethyl-1-nitrobenzene (0.086 mol) was added and the reaction mixture was stirred for 24 hours at 130° C. The solvent was evaporated and the residue was stirred in H2O. After extraction with CH2Cl2, the organic layer was separated, dried, filtered off and the solvent was evaporated. The residue was purified over a silica gel filter (eluent: CH2Cl2 100%). The purest product fractions were collected and the solvent was evaporated to yield the title compound as residue.
