Procedure
A mixture of 1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-phenylethanone (180 mg, 0.7 mmol), 3-ethoxy-4-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzaldehyde (124 mg, 0.59 mmol), urea (105 mg, 1.8 mmol), and concentrated HCl solution (0.05 mL, 0.59 mmol) in EtOH (5 mL) was refluxed overnight. The mixture was evaporated in vacuo, and the residue was purified by preparative HPLC to give Compound 38 (100 mg, yield 35%) as a yellow solid. 1H NMR (CD3OD 400 MHz): δ 7.63 (d, J=1.2 Hz, 1H), 7.19 (s, 1H), 7.13-7.06 (m, 3H), 6.93-6.85 (m, 4H), 6.73 (s, 1H), 5.34 (s, 1H), 4.11-4.02 (m, 2H), 3.80 (s, 3H), 3.57 (s, 3H), 1.41 (t, J=6.8 Hz, 3H); MS (ESI): m/z 492.0 [M+1]+.
