4-Indan-5-yl-2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline was prepared from 5-acetylindane and benzylamine as described in Example 58 (Steps A to D). It was dissolved in ethyl acetate and treated with 2 M hydrogen chloride in diethyl ether (2 equiv) to give the corresponding hydrochloride salt (2.15 g, 99.4% AUC HPLC): 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 1H NMR (300 MHz, MeOD) δ 7.22-7.34 (m, 4H), 7.11 (s, 1H), 7.02 (d, J=6.9 Hz, 1H), 6.91 (d, J=6.9 Hz, 3H), 4.54-4.66 (m, 3H), 3.81-3.87 (m, 1H), 3.51 (t, J=12.3 Hz, 1H), 3.10 (s, 3H), 2.87-2.94 (m, 4H), 2.03-2.14 (m, 2H), EI MS m/z=264 [C19H21N+H]+. Anal. Calcd. for C19H22ClN: C, 76.11; H, 7.40; N, 4.67. Found: C, 75.87; H, 7.57; N, 4.52.
