Procedure
1.000 g p-toluenesulfonic acid was added to 0.500 g methyl 4-(2-(1,4-dioxaspiro[4.5]decan-8-yloxy)-4-fluorophenylamino)-5-methylthieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine-6-carboxylate (cpd.19.1) in 10 ml THF and 5 ml water. After refluxing overnight the reaction mixture was adjusted to pH 8 using aq. Na2CO3. The aq. layer was extracted with chloroform. The combined extracts were passed through a hydrophobic frit and concentrated to give the desired compound.
