A yellow solution of 2,3-dip-tolyl-7,8-dihydropyrido[2,3-b]pyrazin-6(5H)-one (step 1) (1.0 g, 3.04 mmol) and ethyl 7-bromoheptanoate (1.440 g, 6.07 mmol) in DMF (20 ml), under a nitrogen atmosphere, was treated with potassium carbonate (2.098 g, 15.18 mmol) and the resultant suspension was stirred at room temperature for 16 hours. The mixture was diluted with water and extracted with EtOAc (×2). The extracts were washed with water (×2) and brine, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated under vacuum to a brown oil. The crude material was purified by chromatography on silica eluting with 0-100% EtOAc/iso-hexane to afford the title compound as a pale solid;
