Procedure

To a mixture of 5-(2,6-difluorophenyl)-3-methoxy-1-methyl-1H-pyrazole (0.5 g, 2.2 mmol) (i.e. the product of Step C) in dimethylformamide (5 mL) at 80° C. was added phosphorus oxychloride (0.31 ml, 3.3 mmol). After 2 h the reaction mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature. The reaction mixture was diluted with sodium hydroxide (1 N, about 5 mL) and water. The resulting mixture was extracted with diethyl ether (2×) and the combined organic layers were washed with water, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting material was purified by silica gel chromatography (0 to 100% gradient of ethyl acetate in dichloromethane as eluant) to provide the title compound (0.5 g).
