Procedure
3-Methylbenzoic acid (0.3 mmol) was treated with a 0.4 M solution of 1,1′-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) (0.75 mL, 0.3 mmol) in DMF in a 4 mL vial. After mixing for 30 minutes, a 0.22 M solution of Example 187C (0.75 mL, 0.16 mol) in DMF was added to the vial. The mixture was stirred for 4 hours at room temperature and a 0.4 M solution of CDI (0.5 mL, 0.2 mmol)in DMF was added to the vial. After heating the mixture at 115° C. for 7 hours, the mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature and then was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by preparative HPLC to provide the desired product. 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ1.50 (d, 3H), 2.35 (m, 2H), 2.45 (s, 3H), 3.05-3.60 (m, 6H), 3.80-4.25 (m, 6H), 5.05 (m, 1H), 6.80 (m, 2H), 7.00 (m, 1H), 7.08 (m, 1H), 7.40 (m, 2H), 7.50 (m, 1H), 7.60 (m, 1H), 8.00 (m, 2H), 8.05 (m, 1H); MS (APCI+) m/z 564 (M+H)+.
