To a solution of 1-methylpiperidin-4-yl 4-nitrophenyl carbonate (1.81 g, 6.44 mmol) and DIPEA (0.76 mL, 4.4 mmol) in DMF (20 mL) was added 4-(4-methylphenyl)piperazine (1.53 g, 6.14 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours, the reaction mixture was then concentrated in vacuo. The resulting residue was dissolved in EtOAc (250 mL) and washed with 1M aq Na2CO3 (5×150 mL), dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by normal phase column chromatography (eluting with DCM, followed by a 90:10 mixture of DCM:MeOH) to give 1-methyl-piperidin-4-yl 4-(4-methylphenyl)piperazine-1-carboxylate (1.54 g, 79%) as a cream solid.
