Procedure
To a mixture of phenylmethyl [(2R)-2-pyrrolidinylmethyl]carbamate (D109, 1.26 g, 5.38 mmol) and K2CO3 (1.48 g, 10.76 mmol) in acetonitrile (20 ml), cooled to 0° C., was added dropwise diethyl bromomalonate (1.08 ml, 6.46 mmol) in a 2-3 mins time. Then the reaction mixture was allowed to warm-up to r.t. and it was stirred at this temperature for 2.5 hrs. Further diethyl bromomalonate (1.08 ml, 1.6 mmol) was added and the reaction mixture was stirred for one more hour.
