To ethyl 3-(chlorosulfonyl)benzoate (1.0 g, 4.02 mmol) in N,N-dimethylacetamide (5 mL) was added 3-fluoroaniline (1.79 g, 16.08 mmol) dropwise over 30 seconds at room temperature. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours, and then it was diluted with ethyl acetate (33 mL). The organic solution was washed with 1 N HCl (2×13 mL) and saturated NaCl (13 mL). The organic layer was concentrated, ethanol (8 mL) was added, and the mixture concentrated to give ethyl 3-{[(3-fluorophenyl)amino]sulfonyl}benzoate.
