A mixture of 5-cyanoindole (5.00 g), NH2OH.HCl (6.11 g) and NaHCO3 (14.77 g) in EtOH (176 ml) was heated at 70° C. under an atmosphere of Ar overnight and then at 80° C. for 2.5 hours. The reaction mixture was then filtered and evaporated to give a yellow-orange solid (crude material D1).
