The mixture of 4-Bromomethyl-2-fluoro-pyridine (35) (4.85 g, 25.5 mmol) and sodium benzoate (5.51 g, 38.25 mmol) in DMF (60 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 3 hr. Ether was then added and the mixture was washed with water, dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered, and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent, ether:hexane (1:4)) to afford 4.68 g (79%) of a colorless oil; 1H NMR (200 MHz, CDCl3) δ: 5.41 (2H, s), 7.11 (1H, m), 7.45-7.66 (3H, m), 8.08-8.12 (2H, m), 8.23 (1H, d, J=5.4 Hz); m/z (EI): 231 (M+).
