The castor oil acids from 50 kg of castor oil, obtained according to (1) and (2), are warmed in the crude state with 20 l of 50% strength HNO3 (50°-60°). A solution of 1.2 kg of sodium nitrite in 15 l of water is run in whilst stirring well, and the mixture is kept at 50°-60° C. for a further 10 minutes and then rapidly cooled, for example by pouring it onto ice. The reaction product separated from the aqueous phase can be further processed in the crude state like castor oil acid; the pure ricinelaidic acid is obtained by extracting the reaction product with boiling ligroin and crystallizing out by cooling.
