Procedure
To a stirred solution of 4-cyano-N1,N2-bis(4-methoxybenzoyl)-1,2-benzenediamine (750 mg, 1.9 mmol) was added hydroxylamine hydrochloride (130 mg, 1.9 mmol) and N,N-diisopropylethylamine (0.30 mL, 1.9 mmol). After heating at reflux for 12 h, the solution was cooled and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The residue was suspended in ethyl acetate and water, stirred vigorously, filtered, and dried in vacuo to give 770 mg (95%) of the title product as a white solid.
