Procedure

Benzyl bromide (0.86 g, 5.0 mmol, 1.1 eq.) was added neat to a solution of 4-bromo-2-fluorobenzoic acid. (1.0 g, 4.6 mmol) and 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (1.36 mL, 9.2 mmol, 2.0 eq.) in anhydrous acetonitrile (20 mL). The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 18 hours before removing the solvent in vacuo. The residue was diluted with ether and washed with water, saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate, saturated aqueous ammonium chloride, and brine. The organic layer was dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo to provide the title compound as a pale yellow oil that crystallized into long needles upon standing (1.4 g, 99%): 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.82 (t, 1H), 7.42-7.31 (m, 7H), 5.35 (s, 2H); GC/MS m/z 308/310 (M+ and M+2).
