Procedure
A solution of 5-chloro-6-methyl-4-methylthio-1-(2-thienylmethyl)pyrimidin-2-one (987 mg) and hydrazine hydrate (98-100%) (2.5 ml) in ethanol (50 ml) was stirred and heated at reflux for one hour. The solution was evaporated to a gum which crystallised from ethanol to give pale purple crystals of the title pyrimidinone (649 mg) m.p. 184°-187° C.; λmax (EtOH) 232 nm (ε 14,720), 291.5 nm (ε 10,400).
