Procedure
A solution of 1.32 g of m-chloroperbenzoic acid in 50 ml of methylene chloride was added to a solution of 1.93 g of the product of Step A in 50 ml of methylene chloride cooled to -50° C. and the mixture was stirred for 1 hour at -40° C. and 21/2 hours at -5° C. The mixture was poured into a saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution and the organic phase was decanted. The aqueous phase was extracted with methylene chloride and the combined organic phases were washed with water, dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated to dryness. The residue was chromatographed over silica and was eluted with a 95-5 mixture of benzene and ethyl acetate to obtain 0.88 g of methyl 10-epoxy-2,2,7,11-tetramethyl-3-oxo-6-dodecenoate in the form of a colorless oil.
