Procedure
To a solution of 4 g of sodium hydroxide in 1000 ml of water were added 21 g of methyl 1-isopropyl-2-oxocylopentanecarboxylate (prepared in Reference Example 2 hereinafter) and a solution of 16 g of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde in 1000 ml of methanol, and the mixture was stirred for 5 hours at room temperature. The reaction mixture was neutralized with diluted hydrochloric acid and the precipitate was collected by filtration. Product 33.6 g (yield, 96.2%)
