PROCEDURE

The title compound was prepared from methyl 3,4-methylenedioxyphenylacetate (12.5 g, 64.4 mmol) in ClCH2CH2Cl (150 mL), 2-chloro-4-nitrobenzoic acid (25.0 g, 124 mmol) and P2O5 (37 g) as a yellow solid (11 g, 29 mmol, 45%). 1H NMR (CDCl3) 8.15 (s, 1H), 8.14 (d, J=8.4, 1H), 7.58 (d, J=8.4, 1H), 6.84 (s, 1H), 6.71 (s, 1H), 6.05 (s, 2H), 4.03 (s, 2H), 3.73 (s, 3H).
