A reaction mixture of ethyl (6-chloropyridin-3-yl)acetate (0.30 g, 1.5 mmol) (Asymchem, Cat. #110112), pyrrolidine (0.14 mL, 1.6 mmol and 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (0.25 mL, 1.6 mmol) in dimethyl sulfoxide (2.0 mL) was stirred at 150° C. overnight. The mixture was diluted with water, and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×10 mL). The combined organic layers were dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by flash chromatography on a silica gel column with ethyl acetate in hexanes (0-40%) to afford the desired product (0.10 g, 28.4%). Analytic LCMS (M+H)+: m/z=235.2.
