To a solution of (5R)-5-hydroxymethyl-2-pyrrolidinone (5.0 g, 43 mmol) in methylene chloride (100 ml) was added 4-dimethylaminopyridine (15.7 g, 129 mmol) and p-toluenesulphonyl chloride (9.0 g, 47 mmol). The reaction was stirred at ambient temperature for 16 hours. The reaction was then washed with 1M hydrochloric acid and the organic layer separated. This was then dried over MgSO4, filtered and evaporated to give (5R)-5-(p-toluenesulphonylmethyl)-2-pyrrolidinone (10.3 g, 89%) as a white solid.
