To alcohol 80 (12.9 g, 0.055 mol) in PhMe was added triphenylphosphine (20 g, 0.077 mol), imidazole (10.8 g, 0.16 mol), and iodine (19 g, 0.075 mol). The suspension was stirred at room temperature 5 hours. A saturated aqueous solution of sodium thiosulphate was added and the two layers separated. The aqueous phase was extracted with ether and the combined organic phases washed with brine, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated. Flash chromatography (6:1 to 4:1 toluene/acetone) of the residue gave iodide 81 as an oil. 11.9 g, 63%. MS, m/z (relative intensity): 346 [M+H, 100%].
