Procedure

An intimate mixture of 4-benzamidopiperidine (2.0g.), methyl 4-bromobutyrate (2.0g.) and potassium carbonate (1.5 g.) was stirred and heated on a steam bath for 15 minutes. An exothermic reaction occurred and the semi-molten mixture set solid. Trituration with water (20 ml.) and filtration provided the title compound (2.41 g., 82%), m.p. 116° (Found: C, 67.10; H, 8.00; N, 9.39; C17H24N2O3 requires C, 67.08; H, 7.95; N, 9.20%).
