Procedure
To a solution of the ketone prepared in Example 4a (1.6 g, 9.5 mM) in 10 ml of THF was added 30 ml of 10% aqueous HCl at room temperature. The mixture was stirred vigorously at room temperature for 3 hours. The aqueous phase was saturated with NaCl, diethyl ether was added and the layers separated. After a single wash with an equal volume of brine, the organic phase was dried (MgSO4) and then concentrated to leave a very viscous light yellow gum; tlc, Rf =0.06, silica gel, methanol:chloroform (1:19).
